The fauna and distributions of the blackflies in Saitama Prefecture were investigated by collecting the early stages flies from the streams. The survey was conducted at 41 sites in November-December of 1983 and in January of 1985. The blackflies, larvae and pupae, have been collected only in highlands of the western part of Saitama Prefecture. A total number of 9 species, 111 pupae and 856 larvae were collected from 22 sites. Two species, Prosimulium (Prosimulium) kiotoense and Simulium (Odagumia) aokii, were newly recorded from the prefecture. Predominant species was S. (Simulium) japonicum (46%), followed by S. (Simulium) uchidai (28%) and S. (Simulium) arakawae (18%).
