Simulium oblongum sp. nov. is described based on female, male, pupal and larval specimens collected in Thailand. This new species is characterized by the genitalia of both sexes, especially the elongated cercus in the female and the absence of parameral hooks in the male; the pupal gill with a dendroid type of 31-33 slender filaments; the larval antenna subequal in length to the stem of the labral fan. Based on a combination of these distinctive characteristics observed in this new species, a new subgenus, Asiosimulium, is proposed within the genus Simulium s. l.
