The author introduces his own experiences in the databasing and networking, namely, the development of the National Information System of Laboratory Organisms in 1970s and 1980s, the management of WFCC-MIRCEN World Data Centre for Microorganisms from 1980s, the research and development of electronic workbench (e-Workbench) from 1990s, and the construction of the information system for the study of pathogenic microorganisms since 2000. In addition, international initiatives that he has been involved in are briefly summarized. These examples will be useful to design the databases and network for the microbial culture collections in the future.
