Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine the role of efterskole in Denmark from the perspective of risk prevention. Efterskoler are private boarding schools for young people aged 14 to 18, where a variety of elective subjects such as art and sports are taught. Interviews with students at three different efterskoler were conducted and analyzed based on resilience theory. As a result, students have various risk factors related to relationships with friends and family, career path, study, developmental disorders, and immigrant backgrounds. In response to these, flexible practices which meet students’ needs and informal relationships between students and teachers in efterskoler work as protective factors to foster students’ resilience. Efterskoler can be seen as a form of non-formal community that differ from formal schools. The flexibility of civil society is considered to be effective for including young people with diverse difficulties.
