Abstract

Lighting is necessary for appreciation of cultural objects; however it may lead to rapid deterioration in case the quality and quantity of light is not appropriate. The history of usage of sunlight to artificial light source in museums were summarized in this report. The effects of lightfastness test methods, the world status of illuminance restrictions was also reported. Especially, the possibility of usage the amount of cumulative exposure to suppress fading was discussed. The idea of cumulative exposure is well suited for continuous white light sources such as sunlight and incandescent lamps. It was reported that the degree of fading of the material changes depending on the color temperature of the fluorescent lamp. The possibility of fading of materials is related to the spectral intensity of the light source, the absorption characteristics of the material, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to measure and to control any light source.
