A survey was conducted to study the challenges to the introduction of demand responsive transport (DRT). The results were used to classify DRT into four categories and analyze the actual state of DRT operation in Gunma Prefecture based on regional characteristics, operational characteristics, and operational result. The survey results show that the operation efficiency of DRT is lower than that of general bus services. Hence, before introducing DRT, it is necessary to understand its characteristics and limitations, and create a traffic environment suited to the actual conditions in the region.
