Promote Wise Use of Wetlands by Regional Branding: Study on National Implementation of the Ramsar Convention

Abstract

In Japan, efforts are underway to brand Ramsar Sites in order to revitalize the local economy. The construction of the “Ramsar brand” is examining how it will affect the Ecological character and Sustainable use of wetlands. As a result, the branding of Ramsar Sites will be a new means of revitalizing local industries and may help solve underuse caused by the decline of primary industries. However, the use of Ramsar Sites as a tourist destination raises concerns about overuse, that is, the ecological characteristics of wetlands and their impact on ecosystem services. In conclusion, it recommends the policies needed to promote Wise use in wetlands.
