This study focuses on overtourism as a critical challenge in Japan’s tourism market and examines “pilgrimage” as a dispersal-oriented approach to overcoming it. By promoting spatial dispersion, pilgrimage can illuminate local cultures, create points of interaction between visitors and residents, and ultimately contribute to sustaining local communities. The aim of this research is to clarify how such forms of dispersed tourism can support the long-term vitality of regional areas. In addition, this study examines circular economy approaches that can enhance the sustainability of local communities.
