Abstract

The objective of this study is to provide basic information for growers to select cultivars when introducing cultivars other than ‘Irwin’. In this study, we compared the days from full bloom to peak of harvest, cumulative temperature, days from harvest to ripening, and fruit quality of 9 cultivars in heated plastic house cultivation. The following cultivars were used: ‘Amakinboshi’, ‘Ataulfo’, ‘Bailey’s Marvel’, ‘Carrie’, ‘Golden Nugget’, ‘Irwin’, ‘Jubilee’, ‘Mallika’ and ‘Tahar’. The days from full bloom to peak of harvest were shorter in ‘Tahar’ (109 days) and longer in ‘Bailey’s Marvel’ (142 days) than in ‘Irwin’ (117 days). The cumulative temperature were smaller in ‘Tahar’ (1,851℃・day) and larger in ‘Bailey’s Marvel’ (2,496℃・day) than in ‘Irwin’ (2,000℃・day). ‘Ataulfo’ and ‘Bailey’s Marvel’ took longer than ‘Irwin’ (6.6 days) to ripen for more than 8 days, suggesting that these cultivars have excellent transportability. The hue angle of fruit skin tended to be smaller in ‘Jubilee’ than in ‘Irwin’, and the red color was more vivid. Fruit weight was larger in ‘Jubilee’ and smaller in ‘Ataulfo’ and ‘Carrie’ than in ‘Irwin’. Sugar content was higher in ‘Ataulfo’, ‘Bailey’s Marvel’ and ‘Golden Nugget’ than in ‘Irwin’. Titratable acidity tended to be higher in ‘Amakinboshi’, ‘Ataulfo’, ‘Bailey’s Marvel’, ‘Golden Nugget’ and ‘Mallika’ than in ‘Irwin’. In this study, ‘Ataulfo’ and ‘Bailey’s Marvel’ had excellent transportability, ‘Jubilee’ had excellent red skin, and ‘Ataulfo’, ‘Bailey’s Marvel’ and ‘Golden Nugget’ had high sugar content. These cultivars were considered to be promising cultivars for mango production and distribution in Japan.
