Abstract
The article of K. Hultzsch (1949) and these ten of A. Zinke school (1947-1952) on the reaction of mono- and difunctional phenols with hexamethylenetetramine (hexa) are mainly abstracted from the experimental point of view. Then the articles on the molecular compounds of hexa-phenols are collected (Moschatos and Tollens; Smith and Welch; Harvey and Baekeland; Pummerer and Hofmann; Zinke and Hanus).
In Japan, a group of Osaka Municipal Technical Research Institute have energetically studied the reaction of hexa with threefunctional phenol since 1929. Therefore two important claims mentioned by the group are described in the last chapter of this review : (i) Theory on the catalytic action of the nitrogen-containing intermediate by Eiji Imoto and (ii) Relation between the structure of o-and p-oxybenzylamines and their melting points by Akio Takahashi.
