Abstract
First the articles of R. F. Hunter and coworkers on “Phenol-Formaldehyde and Allied Resins (I) - (V)” (1951-1957) are abstracted. The purpose of their early reseach was to synthesise “dinuclear alcohols” and “trinuclear novolaks” rationally, but unfortunately they could not succeed to prepare all the compounds expected to exist theoretically. In 1952 H. L. Bender and coworkers published the famous article on “Purified Chemicals and Resins from Phenol and Formaldehyde” and expanded the group of those compounds. And at last S. R. Finn and coworkers published two articles (1954) and completed the rational synthesis of six “dinuclear monoalcohols” and seven “trinuclear novolaks”. In this review the articles of these workers are historically mentioned.
