Abstract
A main object of coatings is both to protect surfaces of the substrates used and give them beautiful appearance. In the field of coatings for automobiles, after some historical changes, the following coating systems have been establishing a firm position, cationic electrodeposition for primers and the oil free alkyd resin/melamine resin system for surfacers and the two coats (acrylic/melamine) one bake system for metallic finish as top coating and the alkyd/melamine system for solid color finish also as top coating.
Improvements of the coatings will be going in the direction of stone chipping coatings, or higher quality of film appearance and exterior durability, etc. High solid, water-borne and powder coatings will increasingly occupy more important positions in the automotive coatings.
