Abstract
Friction parts are typified as brake-lining and clutch facing. They are set in various vehicles and machines such as automobiles, and industrial as well as agricultural machines. These parts are classified into two categories; one is inorganic parts consisting mainly of sintered alloy and the other is organic parts using organic binders. Above all, the latter is popular, which is made of asbestos and a phenolic resin binder. Since the characteristics of a phenolic resin used for this purpose influence so much on the friction properties, it is one of the most important components of the friction parts.
In this review the following is referred to; methods for producing organic friction parts, sorts and characteristics of phenolic resin binders used for the purpose, and some related characteristics of phenolic resins with friction properties.
