Abstract
It is well known that vinyl monomers such as styrene and methyl methacrylate, and thermosetting resins such as epoxyresin undertake much shrinkage on polymerization. These phenomena are sometimes big problem on the view point of material science.
This paper is the review of recent progress concerning the synthesis of monomers that undertake no shrinkage on polymerization and their materialization.
At first, it was showed that degree of shrinkage on polymerization of common vinyl monomers is inversely proportional to their molecular weight. This result suggests important hint on the design of new functional monomers.
Secondly, outlines of recent studies concerning the syntheses of monomers that undertake no shrinkage during polymerizatjon are reviewed, and possibility of materialization on them is decribed.
Lastly, kinds and performances of “EXP-series” developed by Toagosei Chem. Ind. Co., Ltd. are summarized.
“EXP-resins” are new thermosetting resins that undergo no shrinkage on curing, and are expected to have many kinds of applications in fields of adhesives, potting and casting materials, IC molding composites, precise molding materials, and so on.
