Abstract
Phenol resin fibers “Kynol”, invented at the Carborundum Company (USA) in 1968, are high performance phenolic fibers with outstanding inherent flame resistance. They are the only phenolic fibers currently on the market. They are also useful as precursors of a series of highly heat and chemical resistant carbon fibers and textile products, and a companion series of activated carbon fiber materials.
In this paper, preparation of “Kynol”, chemical structure, characteristics, and their applications are reviewed.
