Epoxy / Clay Nanocomposites Cured with Acid Anhydride and Intercalated Curing Catalyst

Abstract
The curing catalyst for an acid anhydride curing system was intercalated into an organoclay and used for preparing of epoxy/clay nanocomposites which the curing reaction starts from the clay interlayer. When the different two curing temperature, 80°C and 130°C, was selected, the curing acceleration was observed only at 130°C. Therefore, epoxy/clay nanocomposites was prepared only at 130°C which is the curing acceleration temperature. Moreover, two types of epoxy/clay nanocomposites were prepared at this temperature; one is the composite that the curing catalyst was intercalated only into the clay, and the other is the curing catalyst was intercalated into both the clay and the epoxy resin as a matrix. The clay dispersibility in the former type nanocomposite was superior to that in the latter.
