Abstract
This paper is aimed at analysis of the regional development and its conditions of skiing resorts along the Joetsu line. The writer shows the results of the research as follows:
1) Skiing grounds located in the vicinity to the Tokyo metropolitan area in the early period. Accessibility from Tokyo is an important condition still now.
2) The skiing grounds of this area indicate two patterns. The first has the big scale and many visitors, it locates in the south part of the area. The second is the small scale and scatters in the north part visited by less skiers than the first, it has no sufficient fassilities for skiers.
The skiers of the first are mainly from the Tokyo metropolitan area, on the other hand, visitors of the second mostly from the surrounding areas of the grounds.
The management of the first pattern resorts depends on Tokyo people of enterprise, while the second is supported by the local people.
3) The area along the Joetsu line indicates the largest concentration of the so-called family inn, farmer's house for vacation of urban people, in Japan; family inns of this area supported mainly not only by young and low income people in the Tokyo metropolitan area, but also by the surplus lavour of the farmers' leisure season.
