Abstract

The principal part of Gengi Monogatari is Seihen (the very proper story) that takes in the issue of transfer of the royal authority represented by Daijo-Sairitual. Emperor Suzaku, Hikaru Genji's half brother who officially possesses the royal authority, plays an important role as the "antagonist" that makes the plot possible. This is the preface of Genji Monogatari study as a story of snatching away of the royal authority. Focusing on the exile in Suma, the level of the story which surpasses the concept of the royal authority is explained.
