Abstract

The process of establishing the long yomihon during the latter part of the Kinsei period is discussed from the standpoint of the Gugen (fable) Monogatari theory which was derived from Gi-koten (psudo-classic) theory proposed by Norinaga and Mabuchi. Through this pursuit, the point of contact between the long yomihon written in Gabun-style, and those in Wakankonko-style will be clear. To present the history of prose in the Kinsei period, Ayatari's Honcho Suikoden, Kyoden's Uto-Yasutaka Chiigiden and Bakin's Nanso-Satomi Hakkenden are exemplified as epoch-making long yomihon.
