Abstract

In what historical contexts were the variants of Hougen-monogatari produced? To answer the question, first as a preliminary step, I will survey the history of studies on the story which consists of the discourses on the unknown author, annotations on the sourcebooks, and so on. Then I will analyze differences in the representations of Minamoto-no-Tametomo and Sutoku-In between the "Nakarai" and the "Joto" editions. In the "Nakarai" edition Sutoku-In is represented as a vengeful ghost, but later in the "Koto" edition the defeated enemy's tragic fate is mournfully told. I will also demonstrate that the latter edition was probably compiled under the influence of the theory that the Ashikaga family was descended from Tametomo.
