2, 3-Dihydro-1 14-benz ddisoquinoline [3] (58%) and 2, 3, 3 a, 4, 5, 6-hexahydro-1 H-benz-[de]isoquinoline [4] (69%) were formed and isolated as the corresponding hydrochlorides when 1, 8-naphthalenedicarboximide [1] was hydrogenated over the rhenium-black catalyst under hydrogen (125kg/cm2) at 200°C for 30 hr and at 225°C for 40 hr, respectively.
