Intercalation Batteries Using Titanium(IV) Sulfide

Abstract

Charge and discharge properties were investigated on Li/TiS₂ and Na/TiS₂ intercalation batteries in relation to the structual changes of TiS₂ during the charge and discharge processes. More than 2V of the cell emf were maintained until the cell utilization of about 40% for the above two batteries as shown in Fig.1. Then abrupt drop of the cell emf to about 1V was observed. Cointercalation of water molecule with alkali metals were observed in the discharged products of Li/Ti₂ and of Na/TiS₂. It was also found that the presence of excess amount of Ti in TiS₂ seriously hindered the discharge process.
