Observation of the Fine Structure of Manganese Compounds by Electron Microscope

Abstract

Three manganese compounds, Mn₃O₄, β-MnO(OH) and δ-MnO₂ were prepared by oxidizing amnioniacal alkaline solution of manganese(ll) sulfate with gaseous oxygen at 10°C.
Their formation were identified by X-ray powder diffraction method.
The fine structure of these manganese compounds were obser ved by transmission electron microscops. Three kinds of lattice planes, [211], [220], and [112] were found in Mn₃O₄. Whereas only [001] planes were observable in β-MnO(OH) and δ-MnO₂. Especially in δ-MnO₂, dislocation was recognized.
