Abstract
Objective: We investigated an association between risk factor components of metabolic syndrome in Japan and lifestyle habits.
Methods: 5,959 subjects who visited our hospital for a health check-up were studied. We divided them into two groups according to the abdominal circumferences in the Japanese criteria for metabolic syndrome or by recommended/not recommended to undergo secondary examination based on risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia. Differences in lifestyle habits determined from the Specific Health Examination question sheet were compared between the 2 risk factor component groups by theχ2 test. Then, we performed logistic regression analysis using lifestyle habits that were significantly associated with risk factors as independent variables and risk factor components as dependent variables.
Result: By the χ2 test, “body weight gain of more than 10 kg since 20 years old” was significantly associated with all the atherosclerotic risk factors for males and females. “Drinking frequency” was significantly associated with hypertension and hyperglycemia for males and hyperglycemia for females. “Supper within two hours before going to bed and snack after supper more than three times per week” was significantly associated with hyperlipidemia and increased abdominal circumference. By logistic regression analysis, “body weight gain of more than 10 kg since 20 years old” affected all the risk factors.
Conclusion: Controlling body weight is important in preventing atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases.
