Abstract

Requirements of usability design for the packages of daily products are discussed. Cognitive behavior of elderly people's action towards the opening of toothbrush packages, re-filling the empty bottles of the liquid detergents, quantitative dispensing of the liquid detergents using bottle-type container and trigger-type container were analyzed. It turns out that elderly people are easily discouraged if the packages seem to be complicated to use. Unique usage method in their own styles, which may not be intended by the package designers, also observed. When considering usability for the elderly people, cognitive, everyday-life standpoint such as employing common usage method amongst similar products become important aspect to consider compared to the physical or physiological aspects.
