Abstract
We investigated the clinical characteristics and prognosis of the 58 patients with extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) who visited the Department of Dermatology at Miyazaki University Hospital from 1977 to 2003. Mean age was 71.4 years (range 46-88), and 32 were males and 26 were females. Almost all cases had single lesions; 50 (86.2%) occurred in the genital area, 4 (6.9%) in both the genital and anal areas, 2 (3.4%) in the anal area and 2 (3.4%) on the axilla. Tumor formation occurred in 17 patients (29.3%), and 36 cases (62.1%) exhibited invasive carcinoma. Eighteen cases had inguinal lymph node metastasis and 6 had distant metastasis. Most of the patients were treated by surgery alone or a combination of surgery and other therapies. Two patients received no treatment. The mean 5-year survival rate was 68.2% (stage I A and stage I B: 100%, stages II and III, IV: 0%). We examined androgen receptor expression in 18 cases, and immunohistochemistry revealed that 7 (38.8%) expressed the nuclear androgen receptor.
