Abstract
The hair-restoring effect of topical ketoconazole lotion and the mechanism of its action were investigated in 17 patients with alopecia prematura complicated by seborrheic dermatosis or dermatitis. Parameters used for assessment were the degree of improvement of alopecia and changes in the improvement of seborrheic dermatosis or dermatitis. Patients recognized hair loss to be significantly suppressed after the application of topical ketoconazole lotion. Overall, alopecia was judged as “improved”or “extremely improved” in 74.6% of patients. Seborrheic dermatosis or dermatitis significantly improved after application of the drug. These findings indicated that topical ketoconazole lotion is effective in the treatment of alopecia prematura.
