Abstract
It is very important to assess the stability of trochanteric fractures preoperatively.
A classification system must primarily provide valid information about the possibility of obtaining fracture reduction with bone contact. However, at present there is no proper classification. We found the following factor related to the stability of trochanteric fractures. Unstable fractures showed marked ateral displacement and angulation with the reduction mechanism operating by the hinge effect of the iliofemoral ligament insertion.
