Abstract

We report an extremely rare case of large spinal pseudomeningocele caused by cervical root avulsion. The patient was a 17 year-old male, injured by a motorcycle accident which caused polytrauma.
Right brachial plexus palsy and right cervical mass were observed. MRI showed a large spinal pseudomeningocele. 110ml of cerebrospinal fluid was taken from the pseudomeningocele by needle puncture, but on the next day the pseudomeningocele returned to the same size as before the puncture. At our hospital, MRI revealed a large pseudomeningocele measuring 10×5×6.5cm. On myelogram the cerebrospinal fluid leaked out from the intervertebral foramen of the C8 root. We closed the liqurrhoea with a fatty tissue. But on the day following the operation, the pseudomeningocele relapsed. We therefore performed spinal drainage and closed with a tendon ball by the tie-over method. No relapse of the pseudomeningocele hasbeen seen since then.
