Abstract
KN V: 134,2f. reads gatvā cordhvam apy ārohed, adho ’py avataret … “having gone [to the Himavant], he would both climb and descend [the mountain] …” and KN’s footnote says “ruhet B. rohet K. O. ruhyet A”. Which is the correct reading?
The Kashgar manuscript suggests āruhet and Gilgit and many Nepalese manuscripts read avaruhet. Therefore, KN’s ārohet should be emended to āruhet or avaruhet. If it is āruhet, it is also supported by the Saddhp XI 24d āruhet. It is also worth noting that āruhet or avaruhet is a non-Sanskrit word. It is likely that the phrase gatvā cordhvam apy ārohed … is of older origin, which may find its equivalent in the 正法華経.
