Abstract

Aim: To clarify the feelings of primiparas at 1-month postpartum towards emotional support from their partners.

Methods: The subjects were 9 primiparas who underwent the 1-month checkup. The data were obtained by semi-structured interviews, and analyzed using a qualitative and inductive approach. This study was conducted with the approval of the ethics committee of Kagawa University Faculty of Medicine.

Results: The mean age of the subjects was 30.3 years old. The following 7 categories were extracted from analysis results: The primiparas at 1-month postpartum had desires for their partners to [have more interests in them]and to[understand difficulties of managing household chores with a newborn baby] during their pregnancy. However, after starting life with a newborn, they were pleased with emotional support from their husband such as[being pleased with a casual compassion from my husband]and[being encouraged by words of my husband]. They subsequently established [greater trust in a relationship with their husband through his support during pregnancy and childbirth] in life with their husband and a newborn. Such a trust led them to feel that their husbands are[reliable because the husbands understand them better than anyone], and [they could keep going with their husband].

Discussion: The feelings of the primiparas at 1-month postpartum fluctuated among expectations, pleasure, and appreciation as a result of emotional support from their partners. They deepened trust in a relationship with their partner and developed confidence that [they could keep going with their husband]. In addition, they considered their partner's instrumental support and consideration expressed in his words and actions as emotional support.

Conclusions: By receiving emotional support from partners, the primiparas at 1-month postpartum had deepened a sense of trust and safety in a relationship with their partner, and developed confidence that they can keep going with their partner.
