Abstract

  The gut microbiota may be a factor in the induction of immunometabolism. It is not clear whether the exercise habit itself has a preventive effect on obesity through changes in the gut microbiota. In this study, we examined the preventive effect of voluntary exercise on obesity through the gut microbiota using mice lacking a gene of Toll-like receptor 5, an important receptor for innate immunity. An increase in body mass and epididymal fat mass due to the gene deletion and its suppression by exercise were observed. Additionally, in TLR5 deficient mice, the rerative abundance of three bacterial genera (Parasutterella, Anaeroplasma and Mucispirillum) were increased by voluntary exercise. Especially, Parasutterella and Mucispirillum showed positive correlation with cecal propionate, which is a factor to depress the obesity. The changes in the gut microbiota via exercise may have preventive effects against obesity.
