Abstract
This study compared the intonation of formal and informal speech in British English. For this prosodic analysis, Earl Spencer's tribute to his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales and an interview with him on CNN were used as examples of formal and informal speech, respectively. It was found that there were significant differences between formal and informal styles in the rate of speaking, length of tone units, variety of tones and co-occurrence of tone unit boundaries with pauses.
