Abstract
Basal cell adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland is a very rare disease. We report a case of basal cell adenocarcinoma in the left parotid gland, with a review of the literature.
A 73-year-old man presented to our hospital with a gradually enlarging mass in the left infra-auricular region. Physical examination revealed a 40×30 mm mass, elastic firm in consistency in the left parotid gland. He did not complain of pain or have facial nerve paralysis. Fine needle aspiration cytology revealed a class III result, and MRI showed findings suggestive of a malignant tumor. On April 2011, the patient underwent a partial parotidectomy. The tumor was not adherent to the facial nerve or the surrounding tissues, and was removed completely without damaging the facial nerve. The pathological diagnosis was basal cell adenocarcinoma in the left parotid gland. Since PET-CT and MRI performed after surgery showed no evidence of local recurence or lymph node metastasis, additional neck dissection was not performed.
The patient has remained well without any evidence of recurrence for four months since his surgery. However, careful observation is necessary, because of the high recurrence rate of basal cell adenocarcinoma.
