Abstract
We investigated the influence of concomitant allergic diseases (perennial allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma) in 278 patients of chronic sinusitis treated by surgery, by evaluating their subjective symptoms (nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, post-nasal drip and olfactory disorder) and CT scans according to the Lund-Mackay scoring system. Our results revealed that the degree of olfactory disorder was significantly higher in patients with concomitant allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma. In the evaluation of the CT scans, we confirmed that patients of chronic sinusitis with concomitant bronchial asthma suffered a wider spectrum of severe disorders.
Considering that the number of patients with allergic diseases is expected to increase in the future, it is important to consider the influence of concomitant allergic diseases on the pathology and treatment of chronic sinusitis.
