Abstract
We reviewed the recent trend of sexually transmitted diseases (STD) in otorhinolaryngological field, which was pharyngeal infections of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. The number of the patients with N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis in Japan transiently decreased from 1987 to 1995, however it has been increasing since 1996, because of asymptomatic spread in general public and pharyngeal colonization in commercial sex workers (CSW).
The pharyngeal colonization in CSW is a possible resavoir of N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis. Therefore, the nation-wide surveillance of these pharyngeal colonization should be carried out, in order to prevent the outbreak of STD. And we hope all otorhinolaryngologists will pay attention to these issues.
