Abstract
Laryngeal granuloma is an inflammatory mass, which is mainly seen at the vocal processes. We herein report a retrospective review of 46 cases of non-specific laryngeal granuloma encountered by us from 2000 to 2004.
Ten of the 46 cases were classified as intubation granuloma, and the remaining 36 as contact granuloma.Thirty-seven cases were male and 9 were female. The initial treatment used was as follows : (1) Beclometasone dipropionate inhaler (BDI) in 8 cases ; (2) Proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in 8 cases ; (3) BDI and PPI in 18 cases ; (4) Operation in 5 cases ; (5) observation without active treatment in 7 cases. The response to each therapy was as follows : BDI, 87.5% ; PPI, 75% ; BDI and PPI, 55.5% ; recurrence was observed in 40% of the surgically treated cases. In 42.8% of the cases treated by observation alone marked decrease in the size of the granuloma was observed. Treatment was effective in 8 of the 10 cases (80%) with intubation granuloma, and 21 of the 36 cases (58%) with contact granuloma. The significance of BDI was 87.5% and that of PPI was 75%, which is consistent with conventional reports. Recurrence was observed in 40% of the surgically treated cases. Therefore, conservative treatment should be tried first.
