Results of ultrahigh-density MO recording are obtained by using the magnetic amplifying MO system (MAMMOS) which can read recording bits much smaller than the optical spot. We have succeeded in carrying out the high-density write/read test to a level as high as 64 Gbit/in2. A double structured MAMMOS which can double the density of the standard MAMMOS is proposed and tested. A new method named as Zero-Field MAMMOS was developed. Unlike the standard MAMMOS, its domain expansion scheme does not require the use of any external magnetic field. It is possible to realize twice the density of a standard DVD with a wide system margin, even under the same optical conditions as for a DVD (650 nm laser and NA 0.60 objective lens). It was also confirmed that the bit error rate for the 4.5 times higher density recording than a DVD was still low.
