Developments of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles were surveyed, and the present status of the promising lithium rechargeable battery was described. Increases in specific power density and regeneration power density with decreases in internal resistance and cell weight are necessary to reduce the cost of batteries for hybrid electric vehicles. Improvement of both calendar life and cycle life, and the life estimation method for lithium rechargeable batteries with a manganese spinel-type cathode for hybrid electric vehicles are discussed.
