Hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal energy technologies have been developed to extract the natural heat contained in high-temperature, water-poor rock in the earth's crust. Under the New Sunshine project administrated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), field tests have been conducted to develop element technologies of the HDR power generation system at the Hijiori test site in Yamagata since 1984. A long-term circulation test was conducted from November 27, 2000 to August 31, 2002. The history of this project and a summary of this circulation test are described in this paper.
