Abstract

The operation frequency of Uni-Traveling-Carrier photodiodes(UTC-PDs)has now exceeded 300 GHz, which makes their application attractive not only in photoreceivers for fiber-optic communications systems but also in millimeter-wave(30-300GHz)signal generators. In this article, we describe recent progress in photonic techniques for generating millimeter waves using the UTC-PDs, and their application to local oscillators in superconducting SIS receivers for the Atacama large millimeter/submillimeter array(ALMA)project.
