The electromagnetic duality between superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) and single-electron tunneling devices can support the development of new electron devices. In this article, the author demonstrates the operation of a single-flux-quantum (SFQ) pump based on a three-junction SQUID, which is analogous with a single-electron pump. The SFQ pump transfers one SFQ per cycle of two phase-shifted rf flux signals. The term pump refers to the fact that SFQs can be pumped through the device even under the zero-and negatively biased conditions. The pump operation results in a zero-crossing step in the current-voltage characteristics.
