SIS mixers with Josephson tunnel junctions and superconducting hot-electron-bolometer (HEB) mixers have shown an ultralow noise performance when applied to high-frequency detectors, because of their strong nonlinearity resulting from macroscopic quantum phenomena in the superconductors. In this paper, we review the development status and present results of NbN SIS mixers and HEB mixers.
