Rare-earth-transition-metal amorphous perpendicular magnetic films are a good candidate for high-strage packing-density media in the future. To develop the materials efficiently, it is very important to understand their magnetic properties from the microscopic point of view. In this review, we report on the nature of hte sperri magnetism of the system investigated using soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, which is a powerful probe for studying the unoccupied electronic and spin states of individual elements in materials.
