Recent developments of new technology using bismuth-based high-temperature superconductor

Abstract

A bismuth-based high-temperature superconductor was discovered by Dr. Maeda at NIMS (National Institute for Materials Science). Since the discovery of this material over 20 years ago, Sumitomo Electric has been carrying out R&D on long and high-performance wires, and many prototypes applications based on these wires have been developed. As a wire-manufacturing technology, the CT-OP (controlled over pressure sintering) process is very effective for the fabrication of high performance wires. Power cables and ship propulsion motors are highly promising applications of the bismuth-based superconducting wire.
