The history of thin film transistors (TFTs) used in flat-panel displays is outlined. The device structure and the principle of TFTs as a type of field-effect transistor are described, and silicon TFT devices that have been put into practical are compared. In addition, the microcrystal Si-TFT, transparent oxide semiconductor TFT, and organic semiconductor TFT, are introduced, and their future applications to large screen ultra high resolution displays and flexible displays are reviewed.
