Over the last decade, novel protocols of quantum information and communications technology have been demonstrated, and routes to further progress have been indecaded. As a consequence, the first generation of quantum cryptographic technology has been commercialized. Research on quantum repeaters and quantum signal processing is moving from the phase of proof-of-principle demonstration to the phase of demonstrating operational systems. We discuss future issues related to quantum information and communications technology from both the fundamental and applicational viewpoints.
