Semiconductor nanowires have attracted considerable interest owing to their unique physical properties and possible applications as building blocks for functional nanodevices. However, the controlled growth of nanostructured crystals is still problematic. The aim of this article is to provide an updated review of progress in the synthesis of nanostructured semiconductor crystals by laser ablation, which has been proven to be a powerful tool for the synthesis of thin films. The synthesis and application of nanostructured ZnO crystals are reviewed as a concrete example.
