Current status of quantum cascade lasers and their applications to measurements

Abstract

The quantum cascade laser is a new type of semiconductor laser based on intersubband transitions and conduction in the direction perpendicular to the membrane using a thin film semiconductor superlattice. The principle of operation of the laser, concepts underlying the design of the active layer, current developments in the terahertz and mid-infrared bands, and its applications to measurements are discussed.
