What are surface plasmons?

Abstract

In recent years, considerable efforts have been devoted to realize nanodevices by using surface plasmons in metals. In this article, a review is made on the surface plasmons that propagate along a metal-dielectric interface and those supported by metallic small particles. Stress is put on the localization and enhancement of light fields achieved by surface plasmon excitations.
